Veterans Recovery Battle Plan | Veteran Addiction Recovery Curriculum
A structured 5-week, 15-session veteran addiction recovery curriculum created for treatment centers, veteran programs, peer support groups, and recovery organizations.
A Veteran-Built Addiction Recovery Curriculum Designed for Real-World Recovery
The Veterans Recovery Battle Plan™ is now available for treatment centers, veteran recovery programs, substance use disorder programs, peer support organizations, recovery housing, and community veteran groups.
This is not another generic workbook with a veteran cover placed on it.
It is a complete, structured, 5-week veteran recovery curriculum created by a Marine veteran, Recovery Peer Support Specialist, and person in long-term recovery.
The program gives facilitators 15 ready-to-use group sessions designed to help veterans rebuild structure, accountability, connection, purpose, and a personal plan for long-term recovery.
HOPE MATTERS. BUT HOPE WITHOUT A PLAN IS NOT ENOUGH.
Many veterans enter addiction treatment carrying more than a substance use problem.
They may also be carrying isolation, loss of purpose, broken relationships, anger, shame, difficulty trusting others, and uncertainty about life after military service.
They may complete treatment feeling better than when they arrived, but still leave without a practical plan for what comes next.
The Veterans Recovery Battle Plan was created to help close that gap.
Veterans understand the importance of having a mission, knowing the objective, understanding the risks, using available resources, and building a plan before stepping into uncertain territory.
Recovery should be approached with that same level of preparation.
Veterans do not need to be talked down to.
They do not need another lecture from someone reading clinical information from a handout.
They need honest conversation, practical recovery tools, meaningful peer connection, personal accountability, and a plan they can continue using after treatment ends.
WHAT IS THE VETERANS RECOVERY BATTLE PLAN?
A COMPLETE VETERAN-CENTERED RECOVERY PROGRAM
The Veterans Recovery Battle Plan is a structured 5-week, 15-session recovery curriculum developed specifically for veterans working through addiction, alcoholism, substance use disorders, and the challenges of rebuilding life in recovery.
Each session builds upon the one before it.
Veterans are guided through honest conversations, practical exercises, personal reflection, group connection, recovery planning, and the development of their own individual Recovery Battle Plan.
The program is built to create more than temporary motivation.
It helps veterans identify what they are fighting for, what could threaten their recovery, who belongs on their support team, what actions they need to take, and how they will continue moving forward after discharge or program completion.

WHY THIS PROGRAM IS DIFFERENT
BUILT FROM LIVED EXPERIENCE—not theory alone.
The Veterans Recovery Battle Plan was created by Steven V. Watt, a Marine veteran, Recovery Peer Support Specialist, recovery advocate, author, podcast host, and person in long-term recovery.
It was developed through years of personal recovery experience and direct work with veterans struggling with addiction.
I did not create this program because I read about addiction in a textbook.
I created it because I lived it.
I know what it feels like to lose direction. I know what it feels like to carry a past you are not proud of. I also know what can happen when someone finds recovery, accepts support, rebuilds structure, and discovers a reason to keep moving forward.
As veterans, we were taught not to leave people behind.
That mission should not end when military service ends.
The Veterans Recovery Battle Plan gives veterans a place where they can speak honestly, support one another, rebuild trust, develop practical recovery skills, and prepare for the life waiting outside the treatment-center doors.
THE FIVE CORE PRINCIPLES
ACCOUNTABILITY
Recovery requires veterans to take ownership of their choices, their actions, and the direction of their lives.
DISCIPLINE
Motivation will come and go. Daily structure, healthy routines, and consistent action help protect recovery when motivation is low.
CONNECTION
Isolation feeds addiction. Recovery grows through honest relationships, peer support, accountability, and learning that asking for help is not weakness.
PURPOSE
Veterans need more than a reason to stop using. They need a reason to build a life they no longer want to escape from.
RECOVERY
Recovery is not simply removing alcohol or drugs. It is rebuilding the whole person and creating a life worth protecting.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES
WHAT VETERANS WORK TOWARD
Throughout the program, participants are encouraged to:
• Identify personal reasons for choosing recovery
• Recognize thoughts, behaviors, environments, and situations that threaten recovery
• Rebuild healthy structure and daily routines
• Strengthen communication and conflict-resolution skills
• Develop accountability and a reliable support system
• Learn how to respond when cravings, stress, anger, or isolation show up
• Rediscover personal values, identity, and purpose
• Prepare for discharge or transition from structured treatment
• Connect with veteran and community recovery resources
• Create an individualized long-term Recovery Battle Plan
The program does not promise an easy road.
It helps veterans prepare for the road in front of them.
A TURNKEY RESOURCE FOR FACILITATORS
LESS TIME BUILDING GROUPS. MORE TIME CONNECTING WITH VETERANS.
Running meaningful veteran recovery groups takes preparation.
Facilitators need more than a topic and a few discussion questions. They need structure, clear objectives, practical activities, group guidance, recovery tools, and a way to connect each session to the veteran’s long-term recovery plan.
The Veterans Recovery Battle Plan provides that structure.
Each session includes facilitator guidance, discussion material, participant questions, practical exercises, and a clear recovery objective.
The program is organized and ready to use, while still allowing facilitators to bring their own personality, professional experience, and lived experience into the room.

Compassionate Recovery Support
Compassionate support is a beacon of hope for those in recovery. It provides a foundation of trust, understanding, and empathy that is crucial for healing. The journey to recovery is often fraught with challenges, but having someone who listens without judgment, encourages without pushing, and stands by your side without faltering can make all the difference.
Compassionate support means recognizing the humanity in each person, understanding that everyone has a story, and believing in their potential for change. It’s about celebrating small victories, offering a shoulder to lean on during setbacks, and reminding individuals that they are not defined by their past but by their resilience and determination.
In a world that can sometimes feel cold and indifferent, compassionate support warms the soul and ignites the spark of recovery. It fosters an environment where individuals feel safe to be vulnerable, to seek help, and to embrace the process of healing. This unwavering support empowers individuals to rebuild their lives, restore their sense of self-worth, and move forward with renewed strength and hope.
Compassionate support is not just a lifeline; it is a testament to the power of human connection and the profound impact it can have on a person’s journey to recovery.
